Why Crooked Road Counseling?
Our society places a lot of value on being happy all the time. I’m certain that is not a reasonable expectation. “No Bad Days”? Not realistic. Life is a crooked road, and we don’t know what is around the bend.
I believe the key to navigating what life throws at you is resilience with a foundation of a strong sense of identity and values, connection to community, a sense of meaning and purpose, knowledge of what brings you joy, and ACCEPTANCE. The crooked path in the Buddhist tradition refers to learning through mistakes, accepting and embracing imperfection, and acknowledging that growth and improvement can occur even as life remains messy and unpredictable.

Howdy, I’m Kirstin! Sometimes we just need a person to listen to us and reflect on and explore patterns and beliefs that are blocking us from experiencing growth and joy. My approach to therapy is eclectic (utilizing evidence based practices like Attachment, IFS, CBT, Solution Focused, Family systems, and more) and works best for folks who are open and ready to really work on personal goals. Together we will discover the frameworks that most closely fit with how you make sense of your world and experiences.

A word about trauma processing:
Many people feel they are required to lay all their trauma bare in therapy. I wholeheartedly disagree. If things happened in your life, especially things that were beyond your choosing, you get to decide when and whether we talk about them. If traumatic events are impacting your daily functioning, relationships, or sense of self- that might be a strong indicator that it’s time to consider processing- but in a safe space that feels supportive and manageable.

What if we aren’t a good fit?:
I am a big believer in feedback informed treatment, and will check in with you regularly about how you feel things are going. If I cannot provide an approach that resonates with you, I will readily admit it and help get you to someone who can help you. Your ability to make change in your life is most important!

In my private practice I especially enjoy working with:

Artists and Creatives who struggle with Executive Function, Motivation, Identity, and Connection either as a result of ADHD or Complex PTSD. I am presently working on completing a certification in ADHD treatment. The world needs your voice and expression! Let’s get you out there!

Parents who struggle with Boundaries, Consistency, and Self care often as a result of prolonged family of origin trauma (Complex PTSD). I previously worked with teens and parents in an Intensive Outpatient program based in Circle of Security.

Young adults (16-28) who have been impacted by the global pandemic we all lived through, and are trying to figure out a way forward in their life. The pandemic took a major toll on young people who suddenly had to navigate life without the benefit of the peer supports and connections necessary for exploring their own identity and values. As a result, many young people struggle with not just a sense of self, but anxious mood and difficulty making choices about their future.
